On 23rd January 2026, Queen¡¯s signed a Memorandum of Understanding

The University welcomed a senior delegation of representatives from Kazakhstan and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Narxoz University and Almaty Development Centre.

Queen's welcomed a senior delegation of representatives from Kazakhstan including Minister for Science and Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr Sayasat Nurbek, Mr Alibek Razakov, Minister’s Advisor, Mr Ruslan Berdenov, Chairman of the Management Board, JSC “Almaty Development Center”, Mr Adil Kusmanov, Chairman of the Management Board, JSC “Center for International Programs”, and Mr Serik Kalkamanov, Director of the Department of International Cooperation.

From Narxoz University, we were delighted to welcome the President, Mr Kanat Kozhakhmet, Mr Bulat Mukushev, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr Yerlan Shulanov, Provost and Ms Zhanar Argynbayeva, Vice President for Science and Commercialisation.

The focus of the visit was on the development of an Almaty Innovation Hub, for which Queen’s will be a key partner. The Innovation Hub will draw learnings from the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ Region City Deal – Queen’s partnership, which embraces a triple helix model of university-industry-government partnership.

During the visit, delegates heard presentations from Professor Iain Styles, School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, followed by David Quinn, Executive Director, ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓÆµ Region City Deal (BRCD) and Stephen McCabe, Executive Director, Momentum 1.0.

Prof Nola Hewitt-Dundas, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Transnational Education and Brian McCaul, Interim Director of Enterprise, Innovation and Enterprise presented on GDP and Commercialisation followed by a Research Presentation by Professor Paul Best, School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, accompanied by colleagues Jessica Cushnan and Matt Birch. 

This engagement builds on the already successful educational partnership between Queen’s and Narxoz which has been driven through Queen’s Business School and Narxoz’s School for Economics and Management.
