The speakers will be:

Colette completed her PhD as a Doctoral Scholar in the Leverhulme Interdisciplinary Network on Cybersecurity and Society (LINCS) Doctoral Training Programme (the predecessor to the LINAS DTP).  Her doctoral research was based on an ethnography of journalism in Northern Ireland, focusing on the performative dynamics of false information.  The interdisciplinary project combined critical discourse analysis with computational methods, using natural language processing techniques to analyse newspaper articles and broadcast transcripts.  Her research draws on media anthropology to examine questions of truth, performativity and accountability in contemporary news and media practices

Title: 'Machine Learning Meets Ethnography: Rethinking Transparency in News Discourse'

Drawing on ethnographic research with journalists in Northern Ireland alongside analysis of a corpus of local news using transformer-based language models, this talk examines how algorithmic classification systems evaluate performative dynamics in news discourse.

Joe Wakley (School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics) 2nd Year LINAS Doctoral Scholar
