The fun of joining a new society at university

Whether you’re a fresher just starting first year, somewhere in the middle or towards the end of your degree, or even a postgraduate student, joining a society is a great way to make the most of university life. Societies offer the chance to try a new hobby, sport, or academic interest, while also meeting like-minded people who share your passions. You may even connect with people you wouldn’t otherwise have crossed paths with on campus.

One of the great things about Queen’s is the wide range of societies on offer, including some truly unique ones you may not find anywhere else. With so many options available, you can try out different societies until you find the right fit or even change what you’re involved in from year to year.

Here’s an insight into some of the more unique societies you might not even know Queen’s has to offer!

Underwater Hockey Club

If you’re interested in hockey, swimming, or just have an impressive ability to hold your breath underwater, you might want to give a go. Before coming to Queen’s, I had no idea this was even a sport! Played on the bottom of the pool, the game sees players dive to battle for a puck, using small sticks to pass, tackle, and score before resurfacing for air! The society welcomes beginners and trains at the , often heading out to socialise after sessions. They also compete at national competitions and host society dinners, making it a great mix of sport and social life.

Wine and Cheese Society

I headed to a couple of events in first year and absolutely loved them. This relatively new society hosts quizzes, karaoke sessions, movie nights, and themed events such as their recent Mafia night. They serve generous platters of grapes and cheese, alongside a variety of wines for those who fancy it.

It was a great way to meet new people and socialise with the flat I had just moved into during first year. It’s a genuinely unique society that I’d highly recommend getting involved in, and hopefully, you’re a cheese lover too!

Lore Society

If you have an interest in mythology or folklore and would like to meet new people, the Lore Society delves into myths from around the world through lectures, talks, and movie nights. For example, they’ve previously hosted introductory talks on Hindu and Egyptian mythologies. Alongside this, they run quiz nights and pub crawls! If you’re looking to add a little magic to your time at university, this is a society worth checking out.

Legs and Kegs

If you want to get into running and meet people from different years and courses, could be a great option for you! Depending on your ability, you can choose from a 3k or 5k route. The runs usually take place around campus, including areas like Botanic Gardens, making it a fun way to explore ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ if you’re new to the city.

After the runs, the society heads to local spots to socialise and chat, so you can combine exercise with meeting new people, and enjoy a well-deserved rest afterwards! They meet by the in the early evening to start the run. Why not give it a go? It’s perfect if you live near campus!

Caving Club

If you’re after some adrenaline and don’t mind squeezing into tight spaces, the could be the perfect society for you. They practice climbing at Queen’s PEC high climbing wall, putting these skills to use on their trips underground. The club explores caves in stunning locations, for example, they recently headed to Yorkshire over the summer to climb natural caves. They also organise day trips from ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ, making it easy to get involved locally. Beginners are very welcome, so don’t worry if you’ve never caved before!

Electronic Music Society

If you love house, techno, or drum and bass, and are curious about learning to DJ yourself, the is perfect for you. DJs run workshops on music production and track-making, and they also perform at other society events, like nights.

The society hosts open-deck sessions where you can book a slot to play your own music, as well as mixing competitions. Whether you want to create your own tracks or just dance the night away, this society is a must-join!

Natasha Morgan

Medicine | Postgraduate student | England, UK

Hi there! I’m Natasha, a second-year postgraduate medical student at Queen’s. I’m especially interested in psychiatry, and before this I spent some time researching infectious diseases.

Outside of my studies, I’m passionate about art, I love oil painting, drawing, and visiting galleries whenever I can. Since coming to Queen’s, I’ve also started getting into film photography, which has been a fun new hobby. I enjoy travelling, going to live music events, and staying active through weightlifting and swimming.

I’m excited to begin my clinical years and continue developing both academically and personally, while meeting even more people at Queen’s.
