Mitchell Institute Fellow: Legacy, and , Senior Lecturer, School of Law, QUB have co-authored a new book entitled The Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland, recently published by Bristol University Press.  One of its key focuses is on how the Court has dealt with controversial issues arising out of the conflict in Northern Ireland since the ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ (Good Friday) Agreement was reached in 1998.

Based on archival research, statistical and qualitative case analyses, court observations, and exclusive interviews with senior judges, McCormick and Dickson’s book demonstrates the Court of Appeal’s pivotal role in securing justice, both by correcting lower court decisions and by developing the common law.

At the launch in the Royal Courts of Justice in ¶¶Òõ¶ÌÊÓƵ on 18 November 2024, the Lady Chief Justice, Dame Siobhan Keegan, who is also President of the Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland, shared her reflections about the book alongside Sir Donnell Deeny, a retired Lord Justice of Appeal.

In her Foreword the Chief Justice writes that the book “will be beneficial for lawyers, students, academics, and readers who are appearing before the Court or who are interested in how the important work of the Court has contributed to the legal and political landscape within this jurisdiction”.
